SMS scam

Currently, there is a vicious kind of scam where ‘inactivity’ is ‘presume consent’.

One such SMS that I received:
“As priviledge customer, you are given free pass to view our photos, for 3 days. Absolutely free.
After 3 days, and if you do not reply to this message, we would consider you consented to our membership, which has a membership charge of Rm3 / week.
Simply reply NO to this message if you decide not to join as our member”

I managed to block such service by calling up Maxis helpline.

Unfortunately, my wife wasn’t as lucky.
This morning, her SMS beep , and I check it for her as she was busy cooking
message –> RM3. You could view xxxx at xxx ….

That header Rm3 means it has already been charged!
Imagine my horror.
And I went through her inbox
That same message appear every 4th days for dunno how many days!

I called up Hotlink.
They said: I will teach you how to stop the service
I was furious: Isn’t it your responsibility to rebate me? How could you let this happen?
The poor guy: err… err….
I would not let up: You mean you don’t have a way to check and refund me?
The poor guy finally relented: I will sent a report to the technical department to see if they can do anything, but No promise that you will get any refund.
I was pacified: Yes. You do that, please.

Within 10 minutes, my wife phone receied a SMS: A report with xxxx number has been generated.

Now let see if anything good can come out of it …

Movies

Watched two movies on my DVD player within the last month.

sorcerer's apprentice

Sorcerer’s Apprentice undoubtedly was the better movie.
Though the plot was simple, the script writer and the producer managed to pull it off quite well.
The tempo was quite right, the main character came off nerdy, and I especially liked the theme song “Secrets”.
The ‘universe within mirror’ was quite interesting!

salt movie angelina jolie

The same could not be said for Salt.
After so many movies, we were well aware that Angelina Jolie was quite adept in action movie.
No matter how they spun it, it would still come accros as … cliche.
Worst still, we could hardly connect with the affection between her and her husband. In fact, there seemed to be zero chemistry between them.
Thus the whole movie fell flat and rated as … sigh … barely torelable.

“Snatch Theft” Insurance

Got a call from Citibank, stating that they have come up with a new insurance scheme with ING : Insured against snatch thieves.

You will be insured for:

RM 1000 for robbery / snatch thief at the ATM
RM700 for snatch thief anywhere
Rm20,000 for injury incured during such ‘snatch thieves’ accidents

snatch thief insurance

Should we feel proud that our insurance industry has such ‘advance’ policy?
Or should we be despair that it shows citizens had lost hope in our security?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Rechargable Lighting

My clinic plunged into darkness yesterday as there was a power failure affecting the whole area. I went to the neighbourhood electrical shop to get a portable flourescent lamp.

Eight years ago, I spent about Rm100 for such a lamp. That piece of equipment had a natural death as I used it so infrequently, probably once in 3 years.

Yesterday, when I enquired about such lamp, the shop keeper cordially informed me: Portable flourescent lamp has gone out of fashion. A more popular option would be LED lamp, rechargable of course.

LCD rechargable emergency lamp

It has 36 LED bulbs, providing ample lighting, and it only cost Rm35. What a steal.
